Brooklyn Outdoor is a Detroit headquartered out-of-home agency with offices in Chicago, and LA. Insider talked with Candice Simons who founded the company in 2013 and serves as President and CEO.
Candice, how did you enter the out-of-home business?After packing my bags up from Detroit and moving to Chicago, I interviewed for a handful of advertising companies among other industries. Through this process, I found a love for the out-of-home industry and have immersed myself in it ever since. The people, the products, and the passion just had my heart. After moving back to Detroit in 2013 and interviewing for multiple companies to work for and to sell for, I noticed a gap in the market and saw the opportunity to fill it. I wanted to start a company that would offer fresh ideas and bring creative talents to add to the industry I love. As it had been my home for many years, I knew Detroit was the perfect fit. Ever since then, Brooklyn Outdoor has been bridging the gap between creatives and agencies to bring a unique spin on out-of-home advertising.
How has national and regional out of home advertising recovered from covid?We have seen a HUGE influx in activity since 2021 both on the regional and national OOH fronts. Seems like campaigns are still a bit “last min” for the Q2 launches, but a lot more earlier planning and activity for Q3 and Q4.A recent geopath/intermix report even noted that the average number of miles people are traveling per day as of April is at an all-time high. This is making the recovery much quicker since people are eager to start getting out of their homes.
You’ve got a great office in an old building in Detroit.How did you end up there.Thanks so much! Prior to setting up shop in Detroit’s Historic Eastern Market, BrooklynOutdoor was ran out of my home office. We knew that we wanted a creative space that matched our company’s vibe for client meetings and presentations. After booking the loft for meetings quite a few times, we knew it was the right fit to make the headquarters of Brooklyn Outdoors.Since then, it’s become a second home to all of us and such a great place to entertain and meet with clients.Since moving in, we also became one of the founding sponsors of Murals in the Market, and interact street festival that has brought more than 125 hand-painted murals to the Eastern Market where we are located.I hear you’ve got an open position.Tell us more.That is right! We are currently hiring for a sales operations associate position. We are looking for someone with 3+ years industry experience, with agency experience preferred. The ideal candidate would have a “customer first” attitude as they would be the liaison between partners and clients. This person would be accountable for the accuracy of all workflows and deliverables throughout the lifecycle of the sales contract in tandem with the operations staff. Since we are Detroit-based it would be ideal to hire someone who lives locally or near our satellite offices in Chicago or Los Angeles. However, for the right person there is an opportunity for fully remote work. We’re a really fun company with a staff of driven people. Although we are currently working remotely, we’re still really big on communication and accountability. We often refer to ourselves as the BK family. We each bring our own special talents and unique background to the company. We’re looking forward to onboarding someone who brings their own diverse experience and background to the company.
